My Testimony (about me)
! My testimony is really a long process with God all the way. I was born the oldest of 7 kids in a Catholic Family. I was raised by both parents and my dad loved the Lord and loved the church but he was an active alcoholic until I was 12. We heard God's Word at Mass and I went to catechism class. Dad had taught me that God was alive and real. I really felt His presence in my life and talked to Jesus all the time. When I was 12 I wanted to be a priest. But of course they told me I'd have to be a nun. Well I had never seen a nun in the pulpit telling people about Jesus and that is what I wanted to do. I was confirmed at age 12, too. And I understood that moment as my chance to stand before God and everyone to say "yes" to the Holy Spirit. I asked God to send the Holy Spirit to lead me and guide me and I dedicated my life to God.
I went to a retreat called Teens Encounter Christ when I was 16 and felt even more drawn to the Living God who loved me. I was a leader and speaker at a few retreats after that in high school and college. BUT, in all that, I STILL didn't fully understand that gift of salvation! One thing I DID learn and still value from the church is that it was important to confess my sin and turn from it. But I still didn't understand that I was not needing to earn the favor of God, but my salvation was already a gift for me.
I lived a year as an exchange student in France and this is where I fell away from a right walk with the Lord. I was encouraged into romances (and sex) and drinking. I wanted to be a woman of the world, but all along I knew that I was sinning. And I lived a dual life when I came home.
When I returned home I was 19 and in college I started going to an interdenominational Bible study sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. One day the leader took me out to McDonald's for a coke and asked me, "If you died to night, do you know if you would go to heaven?" I answered by saying, "Oh I hope so! - I love God so much and I try to hard to please Him..." She opened her Bible and walked me through the Roman Road and especially Ephesians 2:8-9 to show me that no one could earn it! - She showed me that salvation is a FREE GIFT of God. Funny how I just considered that moment as one more step in my journey with God. Years later when people asked, "When were you saved?" I understood that THAT was the moment.
My husband and I were married in the Catholic church and our first son was baptized as an infant there. We studied the Bible and went to prayer group. We longed to be with others who wanted to pray and study the Bible and our priest at that time did not support those endeavors. I felt God leading me out of the Catholic church.
I attended a Ladies Advance (opposite of retreat!) and received a touch from God and the gift of tongues. I don't understand all that God blessed me with, but I do know that God's Spirit has lead me and my husband to 2 different Protestant churches over the last 17 years and we have grown so much. And recently with the sudden challenge and crisis with our daughter my husband has grown leaps and bounds in his walk with Jesus!!
Thank God He has so much patience with our slow development! - And Thank God for His Word which is life! I thank God that He works all things together for good for those that love Him, even our mistakes!
