There is one thing that everybody must understand about being a "Christian". To so many people, believers and non-believers alike, being a Christian is being a "good person". They're supposed to give to the poor, help those in need, be nice, smily, friendly. And more importantly, Christians don't drink, smoke, cuss or chew, or run around with girls that do. Sure these are good things, but that's not what being saved is all about. That's just a bunch of rules to follow to hopefully, one day, make it into Heaven, and that's exactly what Christianity is thought of today. Just a buncha boring, non-partying, goodies trying to make it into Heaven and not enjoying life.
This is the view on Christianity is why no one likes the idea. But that's not what being a Christian is about. It is impossible to be a "good person" on your own. Our "righteousness is as filthy rags before the Lord". "The human heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, who can know it?" - Jeremiah 17:9. Christianity is knowing that as humans, we are inherintly evil, and could never be pure without Somebody paying the price for this evil. Jesus Christ paid that price. That sounds cliche, but it's true. God is just, and Somebody had to pay the dues for our sins, who was absolutely, positively perfect. Accepting the fact that in Christ, I am made perfect before God. When God sees me, He see perfection. He sees purity. It is not about "the law" that must be followed that makes a "good person". It's being sanctified, purified, made righteous before God in Christ. "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ died in vain."
How freeing to know that I don't have to strive to be perfect or try to find something good inside me to present before God. I AM righteous, I AM holy, I AM pure in God's eyes. And because of this incredible freedom, I want to try to follow the law, that God laid out to protect us. THAT is what being a Christian is all about.
