We can evangelize or socialize. It all depends on whether you are saved or not.

But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" "How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five—and two fish." Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. ~ Mark 6:34-44

Here is the dramatization of Psalm 23. The Lord, their Shepherd, saw that they were sheep. He knew that they had needs. He fed them twice—first with the Word, then with fish and bread (Matthew 4:4). He made them ‘lie down in green pastures,” since they were tired and haggard. In Jesus’ presence is always “still, quiet waters” (John 14;27). His teaching guided them “in paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake” (Proverbs 12:28). The Pharisees and Teachers of the Law and the Romans were always hovering nearby, maybe even “undercover” among the crowd, so indeed did Jesus “prepare a table for” them “in the presence of” their “enemies.” Shepherds would anoint sheep’s heads with oil to kill the worrisome mites in their ears and to keep them from butting heads injuriously; and who can hear Jesus’ anointed words without experiencing that beautiful effect?  He restored their weary souls (Matthew 11:28-30). Their “cup” of provision “overflowed” here, as they all ate to satisfaction, with just enough basketfuls leftover to give one to each disciple.

All of this is to say that Psalm 23 is not merely a beautiful bit of poetry or an academic exercise in beautiful imagery. It is beautiful, practical reality for any who have made Jesus their Shepherd. Don’t shut Him—and the abundant life that only He provides (John 10:10b)—out, by not running to His presence and opening yourself to all that He wants to give you. Trust Him with ALL your heart, even when you can’t wrap your mind around it all (Proverbs 3:5-6). These people ran to Him and did what He said, and they were satisfied beyond belief. He wants that for you, too (Psalm 65:4).
